Microbiome analyses

The total DNA is isolated from the sample you send in. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a long fragment from the genome of bacteria is amplified and analyzed using nanopore sequencing. The DNA sequences obtained are compared with a mainframe computer to a database built specifically for this purpose and the identified species are listed.

Nanopore technology allows the sequencing of long DNA fragments. Modern bioinformatics together with our own patented database enables improved resolution of bacterial species, often down to the subspecies level.

As we live in symbiosis with our microorganisms, maintaining optimal living conditions for the microbiota is an important part of your health care. Unexplained malaise, digestive problems, skin complaints and recurring infections can indicate an imbalance (dysbiosis). A microbiome analysis provides the corresponding measured values.

Yes, anyone can have a microbiome analysis. It provides precise information about the condition of the body region examined and can therefore serve as a basis for assessing your general health.

Dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiome affects the health of the whole body (gut-skin axis, gut-brain axis, etc.). We therefore recommend requesting two microbiomes (skin or wound, stool) for the best treatment options in certain constellations (e.g. skin or wound).

The microbiome findings are a snapshot of your state of health. After a successful therapy or change in diet and adjustment of your lifestyle (sport, stress reduction), the microbiome analysis should be repeated to determine a possible improvement. For this purpose, the four-dimensional dysbiosis blot "Comparison of sample with reference samples", where deteriorations or improvements can be read directly in quantitative terms, is the appropriate tool.

With our technology we can test a very high number of different microorganisms. Please send us a message with your sample telling us which microorganisms you would like information on and we will contact you about the further procedure. This is what our findings look like Example findings

In addition to the organ-specific universal microbiomes, we enable extended and in-depth analyses on the following issues: Obesity, allergies and food intolerances, nutrition, sport, medication and ticks.

Sampling and shipping

Our test kit is supplied with a tube in whose liquid pathogenic germs are killed while the DNA remains intact.

Depending on which test you choose, we will send you the exact instructions for taking the sample. The stability of the sample is maintained during storage and transportation by the liquid in the tube.

The following applies to stool samples: You do not have to omit any items that you consume in your daily life. Please state your current medication and diet on the questionnaire we send you.

The following applies to skin, wound, dental, oral and urogenital samples: If you are carrying out a superficial treatment using ointments, creams, dissolvable tablets or rinses, it is recommended that you take a break of one hour before taking the sample. Gently clean wound samples immediately before collection.

If you want to send in samples from an acute wound and need professional help, you can contact the following wound managers.

It is also advisable to repeat the test before or after a change in lifestyle in order to document health progress.

We send the test kits within the EU, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Other countries on request.

Findings and interpretation of results

If you would like to know who you can contact with your findings or if you have any general questions, we will be happy to help you. Please contact us at mikrobiom@medgene.at

The analysis itself is carried out using complex nanopore sequencing and then analyzed bioinformatically. The samples are processed as soon as they arrive in our laboratory. Depending on the microbiome, you will receive your results within 2-3 weeks for stool samples and PCR tests and 3-5 weeks for other microbiomes offered.

You will receive a notification by e-mail.

The microbiome findings can be viewed online or downloaded as a pdf file from the website using your access code.

The findings are checked and prepared by molecular geneticists based on well-founded scientific publications and current databases. The findings are subject to medical review and approval. Further sources can be found at Links/Databases
